The iRiver H340 : A vision in black

By Carol Finch

The iRiver H340 is a digital music player with a lot of great features built in. This sleek black box has a substantial 40GB capacity that can hold up to 1,200 hours of music. Your music collection really can become portable with this iRiver model which is able to play MP3, WMA, OGG and ASF files.

The iRiver H340 has great sound technology built into the system, it comes with an enhanced 3D audio system which will breathe life into all of your music collection and you can customize your listening. And, it’s always easy to see what you’re doing as the player comes with a big color display screen to make it easy to use and to view where you are at any given time.

The overall navigation system is really easy to understand and use as well; there are a lot of functions in here though so you will probably need to read the manual before you make a start! But, once you’ve done this you shouldn’t have any problems. Plus you’ll get an average battery life of up to 16 hours so you’ll get a lot of use here before you need to recharge.

But the H340 isn’t just a standard MP3 music player. You can also use it store and transfer digital images as it is compatible with JPEG and BMP files. It can also hold any kinds of data files and can even let you read text files. And, it comes with an FM tuner and a voice recording option so it really is extremely versatile.

In addition to all this, this product can work with Windows Media Player which can make your digital file management very simple as you probably already have this program on your computer. It’s also real fast, with a USB 2.0 connection you can load it up very quickly with no problems. Want to know the really big deal here? You can use the player to record from any external audio source, you don’t even need a computer!

The iRiver H340 comes with a pair of iRiver earphones, a carrying case, a USB 2.0 connecting cable, an audio line-in connecting cable, installation software and an adapter. Available accessories include an FM transmitter, a remote control, a cradle, car adapters, a case, an external microphone and an external battery pack. If you shop around on the Internet for a cheap price comparison you’ll probably find these players for around $399.

Pros:

  • Sound Quality - This player scores really well on sound quality in reviews, many users find the audio quality to be higher than that of the iPod.

  • Multi-Function - You can use the player to play music (on a lot of formats), store data and pictures, make voice recordings and listen to the radio, there’s a lot in the box.

  • Storage Capacity - 40GB should keep most music lovers happy!

  • External Audio - You can use the player to record music from any external audio source so you aren’t restricted to just using it on your computer.

Cons:

  • Size - This player is not the smallest on the block, it’s chunky and not as portable as many MP3 players.

  • Buttons - Some users find that the buttons are a little small and therefore not so easy to use. They also lead through to a lot of menus so can be confusing at first.

  • Battery Life - Users report that the backlit screen can be heavy on the battery, this may mean that you don’t get as much out of the charge as is claimed.

  • Cost - This player isn’t the cheapest option available.

Usage Tips and Tricks

You may want to look at buying an external battery pack for the player. This allows you to boost your play back time with standard batteries if you let your internal battery run down.

Keep an eye on the iRiver website (www.iriveramerica.com) and you’ll be able to keep your player up to date with new software releases and firmware upgrades.
