The Sony Psyc Network Walkman NW-E105PS - up to 70 hours of music on the move!

By Carol Finch

The Sony Psyc Network Walkman NW-E105PS does something that not many MP3 players can offer; it can give you an incredible 70 hours of battery life from one AAA battery.

This really is an MP3 player that can go where you go, when you go! With a storage capacity of 512MB you can also take up to 345 music tracks with you in ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus and MP3 formats and the player also supports WMA and WAV.

And, the player is so small that you can fit it in the palm of your hand and you’ll have no problems putting this player in your pocket and as it weighs in at less than an ounce in weight it won’t weigh you down either. If you like listening to music while you’re working out or playing sports then this is a model you should definitely look at as it has a special skip-proof design and has no moving parts.

This is also a fun digital music player to use: the face of the player itself is your primary navigation button so you simply "toggle" it to get where you want to be and to do what you want to do. This is a simple system to use and you’ll be navigating through your settings, tracks and albums with no problems in just minutes. And, the backlit LCD display makes it incredibly easy to see what you’re doing at all times.

The Sony Psyc Network Walkman comes with its own software which allows you to import, transfer and manage your entire music collection with ease, whether you’re using CDs or downloaded tracks. You can also connect via USB port with no problems for fast downloads. The player is also automatically compatible with the Sony Connect Music Store so you’ll have instant access to a huge online database of downloadable tracks.

The Sony Psyc Network Walkman NW-E105PS comes in blue or white. The kit comes with a pair of headphones, a USB cable and the SonicStage software pack. Current accessories on offer include different types of earphones/headphones, portable speakers and car FM stereo transmitters. If you shop around on the Internet you could come up with a real bargain here as current offers are available at around $99 for the player.

Pros:

  • Size - This player weighs less than ounce and really is pocket sized; you'll hardly notice it's there.

  • Skip-Proof Design - The fact that the player has no moving parts and works on built in memory does away with any skipping problems.

  • Connect Music Store - The player is automatically compatible with the Connect Music Store giving you instant access to music downloads.

Cons:

  • Storage Capacity - If you have a large music collection then 512MB won't go far.

  • WMA/WAV Support - Although the player supports WMA/WAV files you’ll have to convert them to ATRAC before you can play them.

  • Sound Quality - Some reviews have criticized the playback quality; especially on MP3 tracks.

Usage Tips and Tricks

It may well be worth your while to look at converting MP3 tracks into the ATRAC format for use on this player. You can still keep your MP3s on your computer if you like, but you’ll potentially get more track storage on this player in the proprietary ATRAC format than you would if you were storing MP3s.

This may also give you a better audio quality as this player is set up to make the most of ATRAC technology so you might simply find that an ATRAC file sounds better than an MP3 on this player. Best thing to do here is to convert one MP3 to ATRAC via the software that comes with the player and then see how it sounds in comparison to a normal MP3.
