Seeing Double: Philips' PET7402A Portable DVD Player Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Curiosity is normally a wonderful trait for kids to have. But 20 minutes into a 5-hour road trip? Um, not so much. Fortunately, drivers these days have a lot more options to keep kids occupied than their hapless predecessors two decades ago. Take Philips' PET7402A. It may not have the most interesting name in the world. But given how it can keep fussy kids quiet on a road trip, they can name it the ARMPET7402A and folks will still think it smells like roses. Philips' portable DVD player even has two monitors to keep more than one child — or child at heart — occupied. It's like those old Coors commercials with twins, except it actually makes sense. In fact, the one time — well, two times — someone asked me "Are we there yet?" during a recent road trip involved my sixth-grade cousin, who was sitting in the front. I'm willing to bet that it would've been different if he was in the back watching the portable DVD player. You can read the Philips PET7402A review here. And no, we're not there yet. Two Publishers Delay eBook Versions of Books If you like to exclusively get your new books via their "e" version, be prepared to wait, at least if they're coming from these two publishers. According to the Wall Street Journal, Simon & Schuster and Hachette Book Group will be delaying their eBook version releases — 35 big titles for Simon & Schuster in early 2010 and a "vast majority of titles" for Hachette. Lead times for hardcover books will be four months for Simon & Schuster and about three to four months for Hachette. The news comes at a time when the eBook reader industry is experiencing huge sales growth. Simon & Schuster says the delay is a move that must be done now before the eReader install base reaches a level that would make implementing a delay impossible (I guess it's kind of like how newspapers now are having a hard time charging for online content after offering it for free for so long. I'm specifically talking about changing the consumer mind set, of course). The CEO of Hachette sounded even more dire, calling the move necessary for the preservation of the industry while describing the $9.99 typically charged for eBooks as "bargain-basement" pricing. In short, they're not making as much money off eBooks as they do with real books. 'Kind of reminds me of the ruckus raised by the music industry when digital music downloads first started to take off. So what do you think of the move? Regardless, it would be interesting to see if more publishers follow suit. Like Being up an iRiver With a Skiff If eReader's are a fad, then somebody apparently hasn't told iRiver and Skiff. (Who comes up with these names?) That's because Skiff and iRiver are diving headfirst into the eReader, um, river come 2010, according to Twice.com. In iRiver's case, it's supposed to be launching its Story eBook Reader next year in the U.S. market, with an official announcement forthcoming at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Because not everything that happens in Vegas apparently stays in Vegas. Besides a 6-inch display and EPUB support, the Story will also feature an MP3 player, voice recorder, personal organizer and memo pad. Skiff, meanwhile, is supposed to be providing all sorts of e-content next year for "at least one dedicated e-reading device during 2010," according to the company. While its name may conjure images of The Old Man and the Sea and Moby Dick, Skiff's digital venture won't be limited to eBooks but will focus heavily on magazines and periodicals. If this improves the chances of yours truly keeping his day job, then your guide is all for it. Speaking of which, have you hugged a print journalist today?
