This One's for the Children It isn't quite "We Are the World." But I finally managed to do my part — for the children — and get my kids' electronics guide up. I actually plan to add more devices as I review worthy gadgets that make the cut. So think of this list as a living, breathing organism that will continue to evolve over time. In the meantime, please check out the guide as I've spent many a late night testing, writing, and testing again to get the guide up before Thanksgiving. (Cue violin music here.) If not for me, then at least do it — for the children. Barnes & Noble OK's eCash for eBooks Barnes & Noble's gift cards and online gift certificates get some extra use "mid-December" with the company announcing that recipients can start using them for payment at the B&N eBook store. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the move comes along the heels of the nook eBook reader launch, which officially flips its virtual pages on the market this Nov. 30. And given the buzz surrounding the device, it certainly makes business sense to allow folks to use gift cards and online gift certificates for eBook purchases — especially when your customers are clamoring for it. The company hasn't provided a specific date for the new policy to take place but the nook blog writes that an announcement is forthcoming. For more info on the nook, you can check out the official Barnes & Noble nook site. Seeing Double: Philips' PET7402A Portable DVD Player Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Curiosity is normally a wonderful trait for kids to have. But 20 minutes into a 5-hour road trip? Um, not so much. Fortunately, drivers these days have a lot more options to keep kids occupied than their hapless predecessors two decades ago. Take Philips' PET7402A. It may not have the most interesting name in the world. But given how it can keep fussy kids quiet on a road trip, they can name it the ARMPET7402A and folks will still think it smells like roses. Philips' portable DVD player even has two monitors to keep more than one child — or child at heart — occupied. It's like those old Coors commercials with twins, except it actually makes sense. In fact, the one time — well, two times — someone asked me "Are we there yet?" during a recent road trip involved my sixth-grade cousin, who was sitting in the front. I'm willing to bet that it would've been different if he was in the back watching the portable DVD player. You can read the Philips PET7402A review here. And no, we're not there yet.
