Sony Reader Daily Edition Available for Pre-order Sony was basking in the limelight just a few months ago after it fielded three new entries in the eBook Reader wars. But in a "What have you done for me lately world," August and September suddenly seem so long ago, especially after the announcement of Barnes & Noble's hot new "nook" eReader. So in case you missed it, Sony recently started taking pre-orders at its online store for the top banana of its new eBook trio, the Reader Daily Edition. Compared to its two other siblings, this device's claim to fame is its wireless capability. Well, that and its pinky-raising price tag of $399. You can take a sneak peek at the Reader Daily's capabilities in our Sony Reader preview. I also should have a review up of the Pocket and Touch editions soon. In the meantime, you can pre-order the Daily version at sonystyle.com. Are eBook Readers a Fad or Here to Stay? Plenty of skeptical eyebrows were raised when some researchers and analysts predicted an explosive holiday season for eBook readers earlier this year. Then Amazon stock reached an all-time high thanks to "best-ever" Kindle sales in November. Meanwhile, Barnes & Noble is "scrambling" to fill out orders for its recently released — or soon-to-be released, depending on your point of view — Nook eReader, which the company can't make enough of to meet current demand. Sony is also citing stronger than expected demand for shipping delays involving its own new device, the Wi-Fi enabled Reader Daily Edition. The whole eDrama is certainly fueling plenty of healthy debate. Despite the successes enjoyed by eBooks this holiday season, some folks are still opting for the Grinch position, including comparing the whole eReader holiday hullabaloo to fruitcake. Others, meanwhile, aren't ready to label the whole eBook boom as a passing fad. So do you think eBooks are here to stay or are they this decade's more literate version of the mullet? Regardless, there's no doubt that this Christmas will be quite merry for eBook makers. Photo © Amazon For tips on buying an eBook reader, check out our eBook buying tips. Name That Portable DVD Player In looking at portable DVD players as About.com's portables guide, one of the things I've learned is that companies who make the devices apparently hate names. And when I say names, I mean just basic names. Forget simple names like Wii or Walkman. Instead, all you get is a mish-mash of letters and numbers that is just about as easy to remember as the name of that bad guy in the Superfriends cartoons who you have to trick to say his name backwards. Now, I'd tell you what the dude's name is. But I honestly can't remember it — just like the name of many of these portable DVD players out in the market today. I don't know about you but I'm guessing there's probably a reason why Apple didn't name its iPod the JXCSF1000945@. Kindle, BlackBerry Bold, PlayStation — those are all easy-to-remember names that help establish mindshare within the market. But (insert generic letters and numbers here)? Hold on while I get a pen and paper. Which brings us to my latest portable DVD review: Toshiba's SDP93S. Like the Sony DVP-FX930 I reviewed before it, the SDP93S is an excellent player. I just hope you can remember what either those two are called when you try looking for them at your favorite retailer. On that note, please feel free to check out the Toshiba SDP93S review. Seeing Double: Philips' PET7402A Portable DVD Player Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Curiosity is normally a wonderful trait for kids to have. But 20 minutes into a 5-hour road trip? Um, not so much. Fortunately, drivers these days have a lot more options to keep kids occupied than their hapless predecessors two decades ago. Take Philips' PET7402A. It may not have the most interesting name in the world. But given how it can keep fussy kids quiet on a road trip, they can name it the ARMPET7402A and folks will still think it smells like roses. Philips' portable DVD player even has two monitors to keep more than one child — or child at heart — occupied. It's like those old Coors commercials with twins, except it actually makes sense. In fact, the one time — well, two times — someone asked me "Are we there yet?" during a recent road trip involved my sixth-grade cousin, who was sitting in the front. I'm willing to bet that it would've been different if he was in the back watching the portable DVD player. You can read the Philips PET7402A review here. And no, we're not there yet. This Clock Tells You the Time, Literally Life can be lonely on the road. Fortunately, Moshi's Voice Control Travel Alarm Clock can help make your travels less lonely and also more punctual. For starters, you can actually talk to this clock and it will talk right back. Granted, you won't get the most intellectually stimulating conversation. Then again, I've had my share of life-sucking, droll conversations with real people, too. The biggest difference, of course, is that you don't have to worry about hurting this clock's feelings. Anywho, you can go ahead and check my Moshi Voice Control Travel Alarm Clock review. All I can say is, it's about time.
