How To Fit Hundreds of Books in Your Pocket

prs300

Plenty of things fit nicely in your pockets. Car keys, wallets, gum, pens, incriminating evidence that could get a dude in trouble with his girlfriend.

But an eBook reader? Not unless you're the Jolly Green Giant, right? Well, not too fast.

With its PRS-300 "Pocket" reader, Sony has actually concocted an eReader that's small enough to easily take around but is still readable.

And as its name implies, yes, it can fit in your pockets (at least it did in plenty of mine). Just don't put it in your back pocket. 'Cause as eminent philosopher Chris Rock once said, just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be.

Here's my Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-300 review.

Free Music Downloads This Week

Here's another selection of free music tracks that you can either download or stream. Hopefully these full-length tracks will give you a good idea about the type of sound that the band/artist produces before you decide to purchase their music. The free promotional songs this week are:

Boat

This free promotional track by the band, Boat, is taken from their new album, Setting The Paces. This track is a good example of Boat's unconventional and sometimes chaotic indie sound. Their new album is now available digitally from the iTunes Store.

Blacklist

For indie music fans this week, Blacklist are another band that you might be interested in. The free music download, Flight of The Demoiselles, is an indie track that also has a blend of rock guitar riffs that give a nice 80s style feel to the track; similar to bands such as U2 and Manic Street Preachers. There's also the Flight of The Demoiselles music video that you can watch on YouTube or via their website. Their debut album, Midnight Century, (Weird Records) is now available from digital music services such as Amazon MP3, Emusic, and iTunes.

Midnight Juggernauts

This set of free remix tracks by Australian band, Midnight Juggernauts, showcases their multi-genre sound that encompasses electro-pop, electronica, alternative dance, and a few other electro-orientated styles. The remixes that you can download via Off The Radar are a taster for their new album, The New Technology, which is available as a limited edition physical from Acephale Records, or as a digital download from the iTunes Store.

Like Being up an iRiver With a Skiff

iRiver-Story

If eReader's are a fad, then somebody apparently hasn't told iRiver and Skiff. (Who comes up with these names?) That's because Skiff and iRiver are diving headfirst into the eReader, um, river come 2010, according to Twice.com.

In iRiver's case, it's supposed to be launching its Story eBook Reader next year in the U.S. market, with an official announcement forthcoming at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Because not everything that happens in Vegas apparently stays in Vegas.

Besides a 6-inch display and EPUB support, the Story will also feature an MP3 player, voice recorder, personal organizer and memo pad.

Skiff, meanwhile, is supposed to be providing all sorts of e-content next year for "at least one dedicated e-reading device during 2010," according to the company. While its name may conjure images of The Old Man and the Sea and Moby Dick, Skiff's digital venture won't be limited to eBooks but will focus heavily on magazines and periodicals. If this improves the chances of yours truly keeping his day job, then your guide is all for it. Speaking of which, have you hugged a print journalist today? (It's like we're a dying breed T_T)

Seeing Double: Philips' PET7402A Portable DVD Player

philips-pet7402

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

Curiosity is normally a wonderful trait for kids to have. But 20 minutes into a 5-hour road trip? Um, not so much.

Fortunately, drivers these days have a lot more options to keep kids occupied than their hapless predecessors two decades ago. Take Philips' PET7402A. It may not have the most interesting name in the world. But given how it can keep fussy kids quiet on a road trip, they can name it the ARMPET7402A and folks will still think it smells like roses.

Philips' portable DVD player even has two monitors to keep more than one child — or child at heart — occupied. It's like those old Coors commercials with twins, except it actually makes sense.

In fact, the one time — well, two times — someone asked me "Are we there yet?" during a recent road trip involved my sixth-grade cousin, who was sitting in the front. I'm willing to bet that it would've been different if he was in the back watching the portable DVD player.

You can read the Philips PET7402A review here. And no, we're not there yet.

Timing the Weather

ambient-flurry

Recently, the portables site featured a talking clock in this very space.

Certainly, a voice-enabled clock is nice and all. But if you equate the ability to talk with nagging, then perhaps you prefer the strong, silent type.

Enter, the Ambient Flurry clock. While this clock doesn't talk, it does offer a pretty neat feature — the ability to tell you the weather. Hey, isn't that how small talk usually starts?

On that note, feel free to check out my Ambient Flurry review.
