Product Review: Nextar T30 Portable Media Player
The Nextar T30 portable media player, despite its inexpensive price tag, is hard to recommend when put up against other devices similar to it. It has a few stand out qualities, but the overall experience it provides is marred by a small host of mostly minor issues. Were there but a handful of these it would be one thing, but it is hard to overlook so many challenges at the same time. Should you choose to purchase this player, it is best suited for those on a budget who want a portable media player which offers a wide range of mostly functional features...read more

Windows Media Player: Synchronizing Your Media Files

Whether you've just upgraded to the latest portable media player, or still got your old trusty MP3 player, you'll need to synchronize it if you want to carry around your library. Depending on your device's capabilities, you can use Microsoft Windows Media Player to transfer music, video, photos, and other types of files. The great thing about Windows Media Player is that it examines your device and selects the best synchronizing method to use. If your portable device has more than 4Gb then the software will switch to automatic mode saving you having to manually sync your library; this can also be turned off if necessary.

For more information, be sure to read our Windows Media Player Tutorial on syncing media files to your portable.

Free Music Downloads This Week

Our music discovery slot this week features another set of free music tracks that you can either stream or download. By listening to these full-length tracks, you will hopefully get a better feel for the following artists/bands music before deciding to purchase their albums. The free music downloads on offer this week are:

BURNS

The track, Teknique, is a great example of the electro house genre that has recently become so popular in the electronic dance music scene. The British producer, BURNS, has just released his Teknique EP (2112 Records) which is now available to download via Beatport.

Girls In Trouble

Essentially, this promotional track by Girls In Trouble is an indie-style song, but what makes it unique is that it also has a twist of folk/punk thrown in too. The Girls In Trouble album (JDub Records) is due for release digitally on Oct. 27 and physically on Nov. 3.

They Might Be Giants

This free music download from the band, They Might Be Giants, is a fun 'Dinosaur' related track that will appeal to kids. Their Electric Car video which can be viewed on YouTube is another example of how this refreshing band uses music as an educational tool for kids. Publisher Hearst said to be preparing "periodicals" ebook reader
Ebook readers continue to draw interest in the news and among consumers, mostly because of Amazon's newest model now available for purchase. The Kindle 2, which was previewed here recently, is drawing some early praise from consumers and reviewers alike. It has highlighted this product category so much, in fact, that we now have a buying guide for related products and features to consider.

Now comes word today, via the magazine Fortune, that mega-publishing empire Hearst is planning to launch a wireless e-reader of its own. What is reportedly different about this reader from other ones already offered is that it will be around the size of a standard piece of paper and targeted towards publishers like Hearst. The end result? A specialized, larger screen format reader which lets you subscribe to magazines and newspapers for wireless delivery.

It is said this new ereader, perhaps available by the end of this year, will be able to serve up ads mixed amongst the print content you are reading on the display. This may help throw a lifeline to print publications, most of which are seeing sharply declining revenues in the changing economy as well as how people look for information today. A number of well known publications have already folded, or are close to folding, so any additional ways for them to reach readers might be worth consideration.

Free Music Downloads This Week

Here is another selection of free music downloads designed to help you discover new music. These full promotional tracks will hopefully help you decide if you like the style of music that the artist/band produces before purchasing their album. The free music tracks this week are:

John Forte

The free music promotional track, Play My Cards For Me, is available to download from John Forte's web site. His new album, StyleFREE The EP, is now available as a digital download from the iTunes Store and will also be available as a physical from Sept. 8.

Cut Copy

The free track, Hearts on Fire, is a remix by Viking from the synthpop band, Cut Copy. The original track is featured on their 2008 album, In Ghost Colours; their Hearts on Fire music video can also be seen on YouTube.

Greg Laswell

Los Angeles based musician and producer, Greg Laswell, is due to release his new, Covers, EP Oct. 6 (Vanguard Records). This free promotional song is Greg's cover version of Kristin Hersh's original song.
