Review: Yurbuds Earbud Covers Are Quite Fitting

yurbuds

One of the niftiest things I saw at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show actually wasn't even electronic.

Yurbuds are a set of rubberized covers that help earphones and earbuds stay in place. If you've ever struggled with earphones falling of your ears, Yurbuds may just be something worth looking into.

For a closer look at how the device performs, read my Yurbuds review.

eReader Poker: Amazon Raises Royalties for Kindle Platform

kindle-dx

Hey, how about some non-Apple tablet news?

Like Zeus on Mount Olympus, Amazon has enjoyed its perch high up on the eReader throne, thanks to its wildly popular Kindle. Which makes this recent thunderbolt from the online retailer especially peculiar.

According to a press release from the company, Amazon is raising royalty rates to 70 percent for authors and publishers who use the Kindle Digital Text Platform. That's, like, double the old rate!

Now, if you're a glass-half-full guy who thinks that rain comes from the happy tears of little cherubs, you'd be thinking, "How nice of Amazon to finally recognize the sweat and toil of authors."

Or you could be like the misers over at CNET and the New York Times who point out that the new royalty rate happens to match what Apple offers to its apps developers.

"AAAAAPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLEEEEE!!!!" (Raises fist with indignation)

Um, so hey, how about some Apple tablet news?

To make a long story short, the denizens that populate the Interweb's tubes are now postulating that Amazon's move is a pre-emptive strike against any tablet that Apple may or may not announce on Jan. 27. That's the power of the mighty Apple for you.

Anywho, this appears to be shaping up as a veritable clash of the titans. (Not that Zeus was a titan, but you know what I mean.)

A First Look at Apple's iPad Tablet

Now that the dust has settled, it's time to take an objective look at Apple's latest product, the iPad tablet.

The quick lowdown: While the device certainly has its strong points, a few big warts (*cough, no multi-tasking and Flash, cough*) prevent it from the being the groundbreaking, netbook slayer that Apple wants it to be.

We take a gander at the device's specs and other features in our first look at Apple's iPad tablet.

iPad Tweets Hit 7,400 Per Minute; Plus iPad Accessories

ipad-tweets

Regardless of whether you think the iPad is the best thing ever or slated for disappointment (Get it? Slated? As in iSla... never mind) one thing is true: It was certainly buzzworthy.

According to the Retrevo "Buzzmeter" pictured above, the iPad reveal was a smashing success Twitterwise, averaging between 500 to 600 tweets per minute. At one point, Twitter activity actually peaked at 7,400 tweets per minute! This is not to be confused with twits per minute, though I'm sure Microsoft fanboys don't see a distinction at this point.

In comparison, celebrity topics such as "Britney Spears" typically get 10 to 20 tweets per minute. I'm not saying that Britney is a passe example, but maybe they should've gone with someone like Lady Gaga (Quick Trivia: Did you know that "gaga" is Filipino for "foolish woman" while "gago" is the male version? In short, make sure you don't sing "Gaga, ooh la la" from "Bad Romance" in a Filipino store, especially around older women. Consider yourself warned.)

Anyway, it looks like activity peaked at 10:30 a.m. when El Steve-o was going through specs. The Buzzmeter also hit 5,400 TPM when the device was announced in 10:10 a.m. and 4,900 at 11:30 as the event wrapped up. Other high points include the New York Times demo and the iBook store demo, proof that reading truly is fundamental. (Somewhere out there, the newspaper industry is crossing its downsized fingers.)

In other news, iLuv just unveiled a who line of iPad accessories. Was that fast or what? It's almost like the commercials you see after the Superbowl congratulating fans of the winning team and saying commemorative shirts are available. The announcement was for a line of iLuv leather and fabric cases plus three kinds of screen protectors. Like I said in my blog of the iPad reveal, third-party manufacturers are likely squealing with joy right now.

Yeah, yeah, iPad this, iPad that.

But what about the non-iPad alternatives out there that aren't getting much love?

Today, we take a look at several slate tablets with our obviously named Slate Tablet Roundup. And yes, that "darn" iPad is still mentioned. I mean, it is a slate after all...
