Apple's Tablet Much Closer to Reality?

For the most part, the mysterious Apple tablet has pretty much had a fairytale-like existence. Recent news accounts, though, appear to have the device one step closer to becoming non-fiction.

CNBC hosts seemed quite titillated during the wee hours of Tuesday as they ruminated on reports about Apple unveiling its tablet later this month and officially launching in March. The Wall Street Journal also reported similar information about the oft-rumored tablet, citing sources "briefed on the matter."

Key info from the Wall Street Journal article include a touchscreen of either 10 inches or 11 inches. But the kicker is an estimated price of $1,000 (yikes!) by an analyst with Oppenheimer & Co. If that price holds up, the Apple tablet, iSlate or whatever it ends up being called better be real and spectacular. Then again, I remember the original 8GB iPhone launching at $599 without a contract. The lesson? Never underestimate what the market would bear for an Apple product.

Hell hath no fury like an eReader maker scorned.

A couple of months after suing Barnes & Noble for allegedly copying features from its Alex eReader Notebook, Spring Design announced a partnership with Borders at the Consumer Electronics Show.

As part of the partnership, Borders' upcoming eBook store will be prominently featured on the Alex's dual display later this year. Borders announced plans for a new eBook store in December as part of a partnership with Kobo, Inc.

The $359 Alex is scheduled to hit the market on February.

CES 2010: 'SuperSpeed USB' products announced

superspeed-usb

What's faster than "Hi-Speed USB?" That would be "SuperSpeed USB," which is apparently, um, super fast.

Now, USB speed may not be exactly sexy news compared to say, Apple's tablet from heaven (cue singing cherubs). But as someone who frequently backs up gi-normous files from my computer to my many external hard drives, faster USB speed is a much more practical thing for yours truly. (We're talking 10 times the speed of USB 2.0, which is obviously a big difference.)

Anywho, The USB Implementers Forum announced the first 17 products certified for SuperSpeed USB (that would USB 3.0 for you numbers-and-decimals lovers). They include an ASUS motherboard, notebooks from HP and Fujitsu, and an external hard drive from Western Digital, which also unveiled its new speedy external drive at CES.

For the complete list, click on the link above.

Arrivederci CES, Plus the Show's Coolest Press Kit

ces_ferrari

So as I gassed up my Ferrari (yeah, right, Jason) and said goodbye to the Consumer Electronics Show, I couldn't help but look back at all the neat stuff I saw during my brief sojourn to Las Vegas.

Like all the nice men doling out, um, "recession cards," which they clapped together as they handed them out to ecstatic convention-goers who took them with gratitude and stared lovingly at the images printed on them (uh, I don't think so, Jason). As someone who's visited Vegas quite a few times, let me just say that they used to hand out much bigger brochures in the past. (Not sure when they switched to cards but we all know how important portability is.)

Then there were all the neat electronic devices at CES. Certainly, I saw some pretty cool things. But the last image on my mind is of this one neat USB driver I got, probably because it's literally the last thing I got as I hurried off to catch my ride to the airport. It's called the Doggy Driver (seriously) and it has got to be the coolest press kit I got from the whole show.

doggy-driver

Well, cutest would actually be a better word but either way, I just can't help but like the darned thing. 'Cause as folks who read my blog know, I just have a soft spot for cute little things.

Anywho, I compiled a bunch of info on all sorts of portables at CES, which I'll be writing about in the coming days. In the meantime, I guess I need to come up with an offering to appease my ancestors who undoubtedly consider me and my gushing over the Doggy Driver as a disgrace to all Hidalgo males.

Zogby Poll: Current Tech Advancement Not Advanced Enough, 32% of Americans Say

solar-shingle

Yeah, that new solar shingle is a neat invention and all. But a lightsaber it ain't.

About one-third of respondents of a recent Zogby International/Scoop Daily poll said that today's level of technological advancement isn't quite as advanced as they thought it would be by this time. Nevertheless, the majority — 37 percent — think mankind's level of tech advancement is right about where it should be.

Unsurprisingly, younger folks are more likely to think that technology isn't as advanced as it should be. When you aren't old enough to remember what a black-and-white TV looks like, it's easy to take for granted today's tech. In contrast, respondents age 70 and older are more likely to think that today's technology is more advanced that what they thought it would be. Those respondents likely remember when a colored photograph was a big deal.

As a generational tweener, I think technology has progressed just about right. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see it progress faster, especially for medicine. As much as I love cool gadgets, I'd love it even more if a cure for cancer was found during my lifetime.
