The Deal With E Ink

que-reader

With the explosion of eBook readers at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show, I figured it would probably be a good idea to start doing eReader-related FAQs and tips.

To kick start things, I'm posting a quick explanation about a key tech for readers — E Ink.

Eventually, I'll be posting tips on things such as how to use free software like Calibre to set up RSS downloads and what have you, so stay tuned.

Arrivederci CES, Plus the Show's Coolest Press Kit

ces_ferrari

So as I gassed up my Ferrari (yeah, right, Jason) and said goodbye to the Consumer Electronics Show, I couldn't help but look back at all the neat stuff I saw during my brief sojourn to Las Vegas.

Like all the nice men doling out, um, "recession cards," which they clapped together as they handed them out to ecstatic convention-goers who took them with gratitude and stared lovingly at the images printed on them (uh, I don't think so, Jason). As someone who's visited Vegas quite a few times, let me just say that they used to hand out much bigger brochures in the past. (Not sure when they switched to cards but we all know how important portability is.)

Then there were all the neat electronic devices at CES. Certainly, I saw some pretty cool things. But the last image on my mind is of this one neat USB driver I got, probably because it's literally the last thing I got as I hurried off to catch my ride to the airport. It's called the Doggy Driver (seriously) and it has got to be the coolest press kit I got from the whole show.

doggy-driver

Well, cutest would actually be a better word but either way, I just can't help but like the darned thing. 'Cause as folks who read my blog know, I just have a soft spot for cute little things.

Anywho, I compiled a bunch of info on all sorts of portables at CES, which I'll be writing about in the coming days. In the meantime, I guess I need to come up with an offering to appease my ancestors who undoubtedly consider me and my gushing over the Doggy Driver as a disgrace to all Hidalgo males.

GelaSkins Review: Style and Substance?

gelaskins

Regardless of what some people might say, I do NOT have an unhealthy personal attachment to my electronics devices.

Now that we've got that out of the way ... so I was making giggly eyes at my beloved 17-inch laptop "Black Beauty" one night and I said, "Baby, can you possibly be even more beautiful?"

"What do you think, Persephone?" I asked my PSP-3000, which lay nicely buffed in its padded protective case nearby.

Still, as wonderfully dazzling as my precious Persephone and Black Beauty are, the plain truth is that there are a kajillion other Persephone and Black Beauty lookalikes out there. If only I could make both of them truly one of a kind.

Enter GelaSkins' offering of outer skins for electronics devices. Designed to protect and add a touch of style at the same time, the skins sounded like an intriguing way to address my electronics issue.

In fact, I liked them so much that I ended up ordering a bunch as Christmas presents for my little cousins' Nintendo DSi's. Read on for the full GelaSkins review.

alex-reader

Hell hath no fury like an eReader maker scorned.

A couple of months after suing Barnes & Noble for allegedly copying features from its Alex eReader Notebook, Spring Design announced a partnership with Borders at the Consumer Electronics Show.

As part of the partnership, Borders' upcoming eBook store will be prominently featured on the Alex's dual display later this year. Borders announced plans for a new eBook store in December as part of a partnership with Kobo, Inc.

The $359 Alex is scheduled to hit the market on February.

The Tablets of CES 2010

freescale-tablet

While 3D TVs and eBook readers dominated the Consumer Electronics Show, tablets didn't fare too bad either. In fact, I haven't seen this many tablets since the last time I played Pac-Man.

From Lenovo and HP to Dell and Sony, several companies featured their take on the tablet or slate concept. Even Microsoft's Steve Ballmer devoted time in his keynote speech to tout the touchy-feely devices.

Check out some of the more interesting tablets to grace the show in our CES 2010 Tablet Round-up.
