Panasonic DMP-B15: Take Your Blu-ray On The Road They say you always remember the first time. In Panasonic's case, one first it gets credit for is the first portable Blu-ray player, namely its DMP-B15. With its excellent display, watching a Blu-ray movie on the DMP-B15 will remind you of just how far technology has come. At the same time, looking at its price tag will also likely remind you of just how underpaid you are at work. Oh, the price of being an early adopter. To find out more about the device, check out my Panasonic DMP-B15 Portable Blu-ray player review. Kindle Most Gifted Item Ever on Amazon.com Apparently, even the mighty Snuggie doesn't hold a candle to e-literacy. This holiday season proved to be the coming-out-party for eBook readers as Amazon announced the Kindle as "the most gifted item" ever in its Web site's history. Amazon didn't provide actual numbers, only saying that the Kindle outsold other popular devices such as Wii Fit Plus in terms of units ordered. Meanwhile, eBooks also outsold physical books on Amazon.com on Christmas day for the first time. Amazon had a stellar holiday season overall, shipping to more than 178 countries, the company said. On its peak day of Dec. 14, Amazon customers ordered more than 9.5 million items — a record-breaking rate of 110 items per second. Mobile Device Shipments to Double in 5 Years Hear all that jingling? No, that's not coming from silver bells or any other Yuletide-related artifact. That jingling sound you hear is actually coming from all the coin mobile devices are expected to make in the next five years. According to a report from ABI Research, shipments of mobile devices such as cell phones, netbooks and other portables are projected to nearly double from 1.2 billion devices this year to 2.25 billion in 2014. Darn it, I knew I shouldn't have invested all my money in those Chia Obamas. Although cell phones account for the bulk of devices shipped now, growth is expected to shift to other mobile devices in the coming years. "Handset sales are growing at only 4 percent, while cellular modem shipments are expected to grow by 40 percent annually, and ultra mobile devices by 67 percent," said analyst Michael Morgan. "These newer categories represent very attractive market opportunities and new revenue streams for operators." Hey, that's good to know. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a bunch of Chia Obamas to unload... Nook eBook Delivers ... On Christmas Pre-Orders Following all the hullabaloo raised by Barnes & Noble's Nook pre-order fiasco, the company announced on its Nook eBook blog that it will be fulfilling pre-orders scheduled to arrive on Dec. 24 after all. Prior to the announcement, there was much consternation among folks who ordered the reader as a Christmas present after word came out that the company may not be able to deliver Christmas pre-orders on time due to stronger than expected demand. But all is now apparently well in the Nook eBook world — at least if your pre-order was scheduled to arrive by Dec. 24. (That means people who ordered the reader as a Christmas present should be getting it sometime today.) As for new orders, those will be fulfilled beginning Feb. 1, according to the company.
