Apple's Tablet Much Closer to Reality? For the most part, the mysterious Apple tablet has pretty much had a fairytale-like existence. Recent news accounts, though, appear to have the device one step closer to becoming non-fiction. CNBC hosts seemed quite titillated during the wee hours of Tuesday as they ruminated on reports about Apple unveiling its tablet later this month and officially launching in March. The Wall Street Journal also reported similar information about the oft-rumored tablet, citing sources "briefed on the matter." Key info from the Wall Street Journal article include a touchscreen of either 10 inches or 11 inches. But the kicker is an estimated price of $1,000 (yikes!) by an analyst with Oppenheimer & Co. If that price holds up, the Apple tablet, iSlate or whatever it ends up being called better be real and spectacular. Then again, I remember the original 8GB iPhone launching at $599 without a contract. The lesson? Never underestimate what the market would bear for an Apple product. Competition for eReader Displays Heats Up The paperlike E Ink display has virtually had a monopoly on the eBook reader market, thanks to support from major manufacturers such as Amazon and Sony. But with the explosive growth seen in the eReader market, other companies are starting stake their claim on what so far has been E Ink's territory. Fresh from the acquisition by Taiwanese company Prime View International Company, E Ink's biggest challenge now is apparently fending off the advances of rival companies to the very eBook reader manufacturers it supplies, according to the Wall Street Journal. Fueling the advances are newer technologies that promise better displays and the ability to support color and video — both of which are lacking in E Ink technology currently in use. Making things even more complicated for E Ink is the fact that some of the aforementioned companies have bigger war chests. Still, Prime View isn't ready to roll over and is currently working on its own eReader display advancements. Ultimately, there's nothing like healthy competition to advance technology and provide consumers even more options. Kindle Most Gifted Item Ever on Amazon.com Apparently, even the mighty Snuggie doesn't hold a candle to e-literacy. This holiday season proved to be the coming-out-party for eBook readers as Amazon announced the Kindle as "the most gifted item" ever in its Web site's history. Amazon didn't provide actual numbers, only saying that the Kindle outsold other popular devices such as Wii Fit Plus in terms of units ordered. Meanwhile, eBooks also outsold physical books on Amazon.com on Christmas day for the first time. Amazon had a stellar holiday season overall, shipping to more than 178 countries, the company said. On its peak day of Dec. 14, Amazon customers ordered more than 9.5 million items — a record-breaking rate of 110 items per second. Is Apple Finally Jumping Into The Streaming Music Business? Apple has announced that it has completed its acquisition of the streaming music service, Lala. With streaming music services being increasingly popular with music fans these days, it's no surprise to learn that Apple is potentially dipping its toes into a technology that provides music lovers with a smörgåsbord of endless tracks. We say, "Potentially", because there's no word from Apple yet on what their business model will be. Interestingly, Lala also provides 'cloud storage' for its users -- this means remote storage for your music that you can then use to stream to anywhere. The big question now is, "what is Apple going to do with its latest acquisition?" For many consumers, the obvious answer would be an integrated streaming music element in the iTunes Store. Arguably, this is something that Apple should have done a long time ago, rather than sticking to an outdated pay-per-click only service. But wait a minute? Could Apple also be thinking of using cloud storage? There's little doubt that if they also implemented this, it would cater for consumers who want to be able to stream their music and have a secure remote storage solution
