The Sandisk MP3 Player range - giving the iPod Shuffle a run for its money?

By Carol Finch

Sandisk is probably best known as the inventors of flash storage cards rather than for the Sandisk MP3 player range. The company is actually the original inventor of flash storage cards and is now the largest supplier of these products on a global basis.

The company has, however, put their technical expertise to good use and they now produce a range of MP3 players that are getting consistently good reviews.

The company currently produces two types of player; they both work on an embedded flash memory to maximize Sandisk's expertise in the field. The company is committed to customer satisfaction with these players, as they are with all of their products. Their aim here was to produce feature-rich machines that are easy to use, that have high audio quality, are as functional as possible and that look good on the street as well.

In keeping with their reputation as market innovators their latest MP3 range, the Sansa - has also been designed with an eye to future use. This player has the built-in ability to expand its storage capacity; there is an SD card slot so users can add to their memory limit as they wish. This could well be one of the options of the future, as Sandisk itself now produces 2GB SD cards so there’s no telling how far this technology could go in a few more years.

The company currently offers the following products:

  • Digital Audio Player - this range offers storage capacity from 256MB to 1GB.

  • Sansa e100 Series - this range offers base storage capacity of 512MB or 1GB with the ability to add up to 2GB more via SD card technology.

The Sansa players were introduced in January 2005; it’s hard to say where Sandisk will go next but it will be certainly interesting to watch. The Sansa players have "in certain review circles" been outstripping the iPod Shuffle in a big way!
